The Game is Mental is a project conceived by journalist and campaigner Andrew Simpson to tackle stigma and raise awareness of mental health issues in sport
Andrew Simpson is an experienced journalist and writer with a love of sport.
It makes him happy, and occasionally sad.
He is excited to introduce The Game is Mental, which combines that first passion with another; a desire for there to be a better understanding of mental health issues.
A champion and volunteer for the Time to Change campaign, Andrew will write about his own experience of living with anxiety and managing depression.
He also intends to engage and collaborate with others, including athletes, coaches and pundits, with a view to sharing their insight on a role played by the mind in their chosen field and the impact on their own mental health of being involved in sport.
That testimony will be provided by those that play professionally, part-time or as amateurs.
The purpose of this website is to challenge stigma and encourage empathy by telling people’s stories.
A prevalence of the first, and a shortage of the second, is what has inspired Andrew to campaign.
““Even the guy that you’d never suspect can benefit from a reminder that it’s perfectly ok to struggle.””
